It's been a while kids. Ive managed to miss pretty much the best 10 days of surf in Ireland ever. Day after day of long period, off shore, midweek empty juice, didn't see a single wave live, lock, stock. All of which means at this juncture I'm officially, after two trips in Jan, more snowboarder than surfer in 2011. Though when you look at the trailer below, it ain't all bad.

I west West yesterday. The combination of an 8 meter swell and a big low tide meant I couldn't find somewhere to get in before having to head back for work. I stood on many's the headland looking at bommies and normally dormant reefs breaking offshore and thought, today, is a day for the ski. I wasn't wrong.

Last year a lone super model decided, after seven years of being ridiculously ridiculously good looking, that she needed a break, a bit of time to herself away from all the flashbulbs and catwalks. So she read about a place in Tahiti whose name meant 'The End Of The Road' in Tahitian. It sounded perfect. Just what a jaded model needed: peace and quiet, away from her phone, stalker boyfriend and publicist. Unfortunately for her, the lovely lady in question went to that place called Teahupoo slap bang in the middle of the comp. And instead of listless days of lounging on an empty beach, got 50 hyped up surfer dudes and all their circus sweating over her for a week. This one's for the ladies. Wonder if she'll be at Bells?

Hello the internet. Just back from a little trip to Laax in Switzerland. Ended it all with a morning of fresh tracks and blue skies and finally cruised to the bottom of the mountain with feet throbbing and heart beating. If there's a better thing than snowboarding on a blue skied powder day in the world, I've yet to find it.
Alas, I lost my camera to Rum Punch and an open pocket, so photo's are lacking. But in the mean time I read an article about Sigur Ros front man Jon Birgison's new solo album today, and it reminded me about my favorite Take Away Show. The amazing thing about the Take Away Show concept is seeing the musicanship of the bands up close, and realising just how talented they are in composition and performance. So, as the title says, no snow, but Sigur Ros. Enjoy.

WA boy Taj Burrows won it, and hopefully clears the way for the perennial runner up to have a good crack at the title this year. Excellent News For Bundoran

It seems the standard is about to rise further up in the North West with the announcement of plans for a Surfing Center of Excellence in Bundoran. It's great news for Irish Surfing, and further evidence (for better or worse!) of surfing's infiltration into the mainstream of sport and culture here in Ireland. Just a number of years ago, even the thought of getting funding for anything surfing related would have been laughable. This, along with the slow rise of the skate park across the country means that non traditional sports (which are just as valid an outlet as Rugby, Soccer, Gaa etc. and just as beneficial in every sense) are finally getting a crack of the whip. The only other such center in Europe is in Portugal, so we are placing ourselves at the forefront of Surfing excellence development by doing this.

Only problem now is the next time you paddle out within a ten mile radius of Bundoran you're going to be surrounded 20 air reverse popping groms and will probably have to drive to Dublin to get a wave off a local. The price of progress!

Two Foot Glass, Castle, Snow Capped Mountains. Literally.

It seems the power of abstract descriptive titles has left me for the moment, but the literal one's tend to do the trick pretty nicely. Except to describe the feeling of trimming along a perfectly tapered bank of flowing liquid glass on a beautiful blue skied early spring morning with just one other guy out, no one but the shadows on the beach, and the tips of the mountains in the background covered in the pristine whiteness of snow. Not to mention the gloriousness of a drive through this landscape listening to Phoenix, or that feeling of bright stillness when you step out of the van and onto the sand to check the surf.. But that besides, literal descriptions are rad.

This picture reminds me of driving though the primeval silence of pre dawn in Sumbawa, on the way to Periscopes, driving down a dirt track with just the lights of the boys on their scooters bouncing around like fireflies in a soft breeze in the distance to guide me through the palm groves.

We paddled out through the mercury sea in near darkness to watch the sun erupt from the palm fronds and mountains in a blaze of red; to two dudes allready sitting on the peak; to snag an early few glassy ones, and then to get in a battle royal with some bodyboarders before the ridiculously early onshores kicked in.

Truth be told, the drive, and the images this picture represent were the best bits. Cliche as it is, often the journey is better than the destination. It's not so much the memory but the sensation, and the feeling of complete freedom that lingers.

As the Winter Olympics continue to brighten up the dark months the amazing Halfpipe comp has been simply incredible to watch over the past two nights, with Shaun White reinventing the wheel by spinning and twisting it more than anyone has ever done before. But watching the Girls last night brought me to a conclusion, I reckon the less spin, the more style. Yup, the girls might not Tomahawk, but I reckon anything over 900 just starts to look forced. The grace of the more simple trick was exemplified by Japanese rider Kazuhiro Kokubo when he busted a sweet McTwist in his run. But the girls, led by Torah were so good to watch to a woman. Sometimes less is more. How good are the Winter Olympics!?

Hours before the Vancouver Winter Olympics are set to start it looks like Luger Nodar Kumaritashvili has, at best, been seriously injured during a practice run. It put's Lindsey Vonn's dodgy shin into perspective, but also begs the question are these games cursed from the off?

This is the third or fourth crash reported from the Whistler track this week (ominously all from leading contenders in the sport), which is reputed as the fastest in the world and which must now, have a serious question mark over it's 5 ringed head safety wise. Add this to the lack of snow at the snowboarding venue Cypress Mountain, and too much snow, and fog in Whistler and the odds are stacking up against the games. Here's hoping the slider is ok, and that the games go well from here.

SO, a surf blog eh. Not that you'd know by the last few posts. Well, got back in the water this weekend. 4 foot glass, with little pockets of snow still on the mountains in the background. Nothing too hectic, but after 6 weeks out of the water it was cold gold. We were too excited to take many pics, but meanwhile, the boys in deepest brightest West Oz have been enjoying some summer swell. Pics by Baylesy.

The End Of Argy-Bargy from The Mad Octopus

I'm regretfully late in posting this, but all the same, it's worth it. Bill McLaren, the eponymous "Voice of Rugby", and one of my personal heroes, died this week aged 86. What a pleasure it was to have ever had the luck to hear the great man's joyous commentary on the game of rugby live and swaddled in the fever of the moment of a match being transmitted as it happened rather than distilled over the years on You Tube.

Yet, the magic of the man and his true passion for the game as one of the last great commentators shine through on any recording. (not, as we get today, ex players who, although rich in tactical nous and expert analysis, may, in reality, lack any sort of art or craft in the theatre of commentating)

What struck most of all, even when his beloved Scotland were playing, was his sense of sporting fairness in commentary, and the unavoidable air of gentlemanliness which he exuded. He was never afraid to call it as he saw it, but very rarely, if ever criticised a player's character, choosing instead to immortalise them with a unique turn of phrase. In a time long before professionalism, he made legends out of mere sportsmen.

You can read his obituary in The Guardian here, and watch below for a reminder of the art, skill and warmth of the great man who loved rugby so much.

Josh Ritter said, it. Snow is gone. Or at least on it's way out in a big way. How cyclical it is that the big freeze is always followed by the big thaw. Anyways just for a little while, Dublin became Insbruck or Vancouver, and it made this little bit of dark winter all that more interesting. Driving around town, for the shortest few hours, became an exercise in checking out the faintest incline for sliding possibilities. Grit or no grit, Im all for it.

Photo's of the past few day's snowy madness to follow, but in the mean time, while it melts outside, the guys at Isenseven have got plenty of snowy fun to keep the snowflakes in your heart from disappearing entirely.
